Is it actually magic? No, it uses a reed switch. Reed switches are controlled by magnets. In this case, when there is a magnet near, it closes the switch and allows electricity to flow through it powering the rest of the circuit. Under the black tip of the wand is a small magnet to control the reed switch.

For an even more magical look, you can embed the reed switch in the dough so that it can’t be seen.
