Lab-Aids: Molecules of Life Modeling Kit

What are the molecules of life? Science has proven that atoms unite into molecules, and that when molecules exchange atoms, new substances are created. Inorganic substances such as water, carbon dioxide, and oxygen, together with organic substances such as carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, make the protoplasm found within the cells of living organisms. The molecules of life are the molecules that make protoplasm.

In the Complete Molecules of Life kit, students study the chemistry of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Durable, color-coded plastic atoms are assembled, disassembled, and reassembled quickly and easily into 3-D molecules that provide highly graphic and extremely motivating learning experiences.

Carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins can be completed as a series of lab activities, or as separate units. Students can also work independently for enrichment or remedial study. Each module can be systematically subdivided into smaller sections so students can do the work when most appropriate.

This kit includes fifteen packets of color-coded molecular model components, a Teacher's Guide, and 36 student worksheets. The Expand-a-Kit (LAB-505EL) contains one additional packet of molecular model components.
Scientific Concepts:
  • Build 3-dimensional models of carbohydrates, fats and protein
  • Determine the molecular characteristics of carbohydrates, fats and protein
  • Understand the structure and function of carbohydrates, fats and protein in relation to the chemical processes of the human body
  • Compare molecular models to structural function
  • Build a simple starch molecule by dehydration synthesis
  • Study isomers

Content List:
  • 1 Teacher's Guide
  • 36 Student Worksheets and Guides
  • 12 Packages each containing: 15 C tetrahedral centers-black, 13 O double electron atoms-blue, 4 N tetrahedral centers-red, 32 H single electron atoms-white, 58 covalent electron bonds

Classroom Planning:
  • To complete the three activities in this kit will require three to six ~55 minute periods
