Target Grades: 8-12
Students examine different brands of shampoo and choose between products based on their own scientific and economic evaluations. Comparisons in this consumer science activity include pH, viscosity, percent solids, foam generation, foam retention, and ink dispersion. Detergent micelles and the hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties of cationic and anionic detergents are discussed. Students also perform a cost analysis on the shampoos. Required, but not included: heat lamp or hot plate, stopwatch, lab glassware, and six brands of shampoo.
