Kemtec Science: Art Forgery
- Target Grades: 6-14
- Number of Students: 24 students working in six groups of four
Add excitement to art, chemistry, or general science classrooms. Students use scientific observation and reasoning as they master the techniques used to distinguish original paintings from forgeries. They are presented with “real" and “forged" paintings in the styles of Monet, Van Gogh, and Pollack and asked to determine which are original. To determine this, they test for lead in the paint, check for fluorescence under UV light, and analyze paint colors to determine if they are mixed or layered.
