Lab-Aids: Understanding and Comparing Antacids Kit

This Lab-Aid makes science more interesting and meaningful by dealing with fundamental chemical principles and applying them to products found at home. Most antacids are composed of bases or alkalizing agents. Students are able to take over-the-counter antacids (Rolaids, Mylanta, etc.) brought from home and perform a neutralizing activity which determines how much acid can be neutralized by a particular brand. After conducting the activities, students make comparisons and draw conclusions about the different brands tested. This kit is complete for 30 students. Note: This kit does not contain antacids; they must be supplied.

• 1 Vial of universal pH indicator strips
• 24 Calibrated tubes with caps
• 1 Drop control bottle of Phenolphthalein solution 15ml
• 8 Drop control bottles of 0.1M Sodium Hydroxide 30ml
• 4 Drop control bottles of 0.1M Hydrochloric Acid (fill is 100 ml), 180ml
• 2 60mL bottles of 0.5M Hydrochloric Acid
• 2 60 mL bottles of 0.5M Sodium Hydroxide
• 2 60 mL bottles of Limewater

• To complete this kit requires one ~50-minute class periods
