Up to $17.1 Billion from the Meta Settlement: Is Your Education Program Ready?

A landmark multistate settlement with Meta could provide up to $17.1 billion to participating states and territories, along with major new child-safety requirements for Facebook and Instagram.

For educators, schools, districts, afterschool programs, nonprofits, and youth-serving organizations, the big question is: What happens next?

Settlement funds are intended to address and reduce harms associated with unhealthy social media use among young people. Depending on how individual states establish their programs, potential uses could include education programs, afterschool and summer programming, youth mental-health services, school-based initiatives, public-health programs, and other efforts supporting young people.

But potential funding does not mean automatic funding.

Each state will determine how its settlement dollars are administered, what programs are eligible, how organizations can access funding, and what requirements applicants must meet. Allowable does not mean automatic. The settlement opens the door. Each state still writes its own rules for who walks through it.

That makes readiness important.
