Lab-Aids: DNA Fingerprinting Diagnostics (Replication, PCR and RFLP) Kit
This timely Lab-Aid introduces biotechnology, forensic science, or AP Biology students to the concepts of DNA replication and how it relates to PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) and RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) analyses of DNA. They also observe how DNA analyses can be used to diagnose disease. This activity is a great introduction or review if you are fortunate enough to have the equipment and materials to do gel electrophoresis and DNA fingerprinting. Material in this kit, for 30 students, is reusable.
Scientific Concepts:
- Construct specific genes with the characteristic nucleotide configuration for cystic fibrosis
- Observe the difference between normal and mutant genes
- Understand how the disease can be diagnosed by two methods of DNA analysis
- Demonstrates amplification and PCR ( Polymerase Chain Reaction)
- Simulate gel electrophoresis
