Lab-Aids:‚ pH Measurements and Indicator Kit
In this very popular Applied Science Concept Kit, students perform a series of very colorful tests that help them to develop a better understanding of pH, and its relationship to acids and bases, and its effect on indicator dyes. Using a LAB-AIDS‚® Chemplates‚® and universal indicator, each student creates his own pH color guide. This color guide is then used to identify the pH of the three unknowns, which are provided in this kit.
Activities establish several criteria:‚
- Indicators can be acid or base‚
- Indicators have different and specific pH ranges‚
- A mixture of indicators can be used to create a specific guide‚
- A student created color guide can be used to identify the pH of "Unknown Solutions"
Scientific Concepts:
- Explore the wide range of acid and bases and their effect on indicator dyes
- Establish that indicator dyes have ranges that are different
- Determine that a mixture of indicators can be used as a specific color guide for pH determination
- Create individual color guides
- Color guide is used to identify pH of unknowns (provided in kit)
