Lab-Aids: Flame Tests and Emission Spectroscopy Experiment Kit
The concept of spectrum analysis is introduced with this LAB-AIDS‚®. Bunsen Burners (or other flame source) are all you need to enable students to conduct these dramatically colorful, spectroscopy experiments. Students spray fine mists of water-based solutions, which contain various amounts of salts, into a Bunsen burner flame. They first observe the color that various metallic elements impart to a Bunsen flame. Then, the students view the flame through a spectroscope and observe the spectra of each of the elements that are visible to the human eye. Students learn that no two spectrum have identical colors. They work in teams as one student sprays the mist solution through the flame and a team-mate observes the spectrum created. This laboratory procedure is also an important step in the analysis of an unknown substance.
- Observe and record colors emitted by elements upon heating
- Observe individual spectrum through hand held spectroscopes
- Explore process of spectrum analysis
