Kemtec Science: Analysis of Fingerprints
- Target Grades: 7-14
- Number of Students: 24 students working in six groups of four
This kit provides students with the opportunity to learn standard techniques for dusting for fingerprints using a variety of powders and for developing latent fingerprints from a variety of surfaces. Students lift fingerprints from slides, develop prints on paper using both the Ninhydrin method and the Lugol Iodine method, use the cyanoacrylate fuming method to visualize a fingerprint on a metal spoon, and learn to identify direct prints. Each investigative group prepares “fingerprint evidence" for another class group to analyze and with the aid of Modus Operandi sheets, the group identifies the fingerprints of the suspects with the aid of fingerprint standards developed by the FBI. Includes instructional manuals and student worksheets. Required, but not included: fume hood, (6) one-quart jars or one-liter beakers. Meets national standards for grade levels 10-12.
